What’s most important about renting a car? It’s not rate, size of car, or even courtesy. It’s being able to return the car when you’re done with it.
So when I went to Advantage Rent A Car in San Diego, an off-airport rental lot in a somewhat out-of-the-way location, the first thing I asked for was a map with directions to the lot so I wouldn’t have trouble returning it. Surprise, surprise: They gave me a map, but it pointed me to an old location — and the directions from the airport, Interstate 5, Interstate 8 and so forth, were all crossed out. Ugh!
I finally found the car lot. I suggested to Dan, the customer service manager (who doesn’t give out his last name “because that’s personal information”), that they should photocopy directions onto a slip of paper.
He at first explained to me that it would be too difficult. Then he said they don’t have enough paper. And then he said he thought it would be a good idea, and he’d recommend it to management. “But I won’t commit to it because you’re a customer and I can’t make a commitment to a customer,” he told me.
Hunh?
This from the company that says, “To get the advantage, rent from Advantage.”
